At the Health Innovation Via Engineering (HIVE) Laboratory, we are at the forefront of merging medical knowledge with engineering innovation to create groundbreaking health solutions. Hosted within the Lambe Institute for Translational Research at the University of Galway, the HIVE Lab was established in 2019 with a vision to revolutionize healthcare through interdisciplinary collaboration.

Under the leadership of Professor Derek O’Keeffe, a visionary who holds dual qualifications as a Physician and Engineer, our team is dedicated to the pursuit of excellence in digital health and clinical care. Professor O’Keeffe (@Physicianeer), guides our research philosophy with a unique perspective that bridges the gap between medicine and engineering, ensuring our solutions are both innovative and clinically relevant.

HIVE Lab is proud to be a part of the Science Foundation Ireland CÚRAM and Lero network of excellen Save ce, which allows us to collaborate with leading researchers and industry partners. This network amplifies our capabilities, enabling us to undertake ambitious projects that have the potential to change the way healthcare is delivered.

Our work is characterized by a commitment to innovation, exemplified by our pioneering delivery of insulin via drone – the world’s first. This project not only showcased the potential of drone technology in healthcare but also set a precedent for how we think about delivering medical supplies in critical situations. During the COVID-19 pandemic, our team was quick to respond with several technological innovations aimed at combating the challenges posed by the virus, demonstrating our agility and commitment to public health.

Building on our foundation of success, we have recently embarked on the Home Health project, an initiative designed to enhance healthcare delivery in the home setting. This project reflects our belief in the importance of accessible healthcare and our commitment to leveraging technology to make health management more efficient and effective for patients.

Looking to the future, we are excited to announce the start of our Virtual Hospital project. This ambitious endeavor aims to reimagine the hospital experience, leveraging digital tools to provide comprehensive care outside the traditional hospital setting. By doing so, we hope to reduce the burden on healthcare facilities while offering patients the convenience and comfort of receiving care in their own homes.
